Today, I am joined by our second-hand department manager, Bill.
And we've got the brand new Nikon - or as I like to say, Nikon - D850!
It's the full-frame resolution king in the Nikon line and we're pretty excited about it, and Bill's especially excited because he wants one!
(Bill)
I do indeed! Just got them in today.
(John)
Yeah, it's just come in and we're going to get this video online exactly right on the money when the embargo is lifted. So that's happening very, very soon.
And let's talk about the box!
(Bill)
Okay! So, it's a standard Nikon box, and on the outside we've got the usual - It's made in Thailand, I've noticed.
[Bill holds the gold Nikon box and reads the writing on the outside]
(John)
Oh, yeah, good to know, yeah.
(Bill)
So it's got Made in Thailand on the side there on the back.
On the side we've got the usual bar codes and so on.
(John)
Serial numbers and all that kind of stuff.
(Bill)
Serial number and then, compatibility.
(John)
It's got Bluetooth! What's Photo Nation? I've got no idea.
(Bill)
I don't know. Something new; something exciting I hope.

Maybe we'll find out when we open it?

Okay, so let's open it! Let's do it!

Okay, I'm going to let Bill have the honours here.
[Bill opens the gold Nikon box]

First time! Yes!
(John)
What have you got on the top here?
(Bill)
Very minimal.
(John)
Got a cardboard flap; looks like the manual.
[Bill removes a plastic covered manual]
(Bill)
So that's, yes, just a straight manual in there, under tape.
Warranty card with the Australian warranty, because it's an Australian delivery one.
(John)
Yeah... open up the flap. Ooh, I see a camera!
[Bill opens the cardboard flap and removes the plastic covered camera]

Okay, what have we got? Bubble wrap.
(John)
I'll move the bx out of the way just for a sec here.
(Bill)
Okay, so we have bubble wrap.
(John)
So, it's safely in bubble wrap, that's good, so we know it's not going to get damaged in transit.
[Bill removes the camera body from the bubble wrap]

And there he is.

Oh, okay! We've got a little bit of clear protective plastic over the LCD, so that doesn't get scratched.
[Camera view changes to above and shows the new D850 from above]

That's the new tilt, and yeah, actually, show us the action on that LCD, Bill.
[Bill adjusts the back viewfinder - it changes to various positions as needed]
(John)
So, it will flip up. How far does it flip up? All the way? Oh, even further!
(Bill)
So it goes up and then down, so you've got your up and down adjustment.
[The rear viewfinder screen flips right up and right down]
(John)
Yeah, that's pretty exciting.
(Bill)
Right there.

How does it feel in the hand?
(Bill)
Very good! Very nice deep grip, I've noticed, straight off the cup, compared to the D810.
It does feel a bit lighter but there's no battery in it.
But yeah, very similar.
(John)
And of course, it's sealed a bit more in the penta-prism area because there is no longer a pop-up flash.
(Bill)
Yeah, you can see the two Mic... microphones on the top there.
It has a very sort of, sculpted top prism, I've noticed.
(John)
There have been good reports from some of the other reviewers that the built-in Mics actually have very good sound quality.
(Bill)
Yeah, we'll see. We'll see once we get... we start testing it.
(John)
Yeah! Okay, let's see what else is in the box!
Okay, I'll just pick this up and put this over here.
[John takes the D850 body and holds it]
I'll admire this... hey, that does feel nice; that feels really nice.
[Bill unpacks the rest of the items in the box]

Very ergonomic.
(John)
It's not a sticky grip, it's quite smooth. It's, yeah, I like it. It's nice.
Okay, so we've got a power cable.
(Bill)
Power cable, Australian.
(John)
Australian standard.
(Bill)
Australian standard. We have a USB 3 cable.
(John)
Yeah, standard use. Okay, yeah, yeah. And our USB 3 port is... there we go.. open up the door and we've got USB 3 over there. Looks like we've got HDMI below that, and above we have headphone and Mic.; two separate little...
I don't know how we open that Mic... how do you open it?
(Bill)
Just keep on opening it, it just pops open.
(John)
Oh, it goes further? Oh, okay! Headphone and Mic., okay.
So we're all good there.
(Bill)
Which is no change from the D810.
(John)
Yeah. So to the untrained eye, do you think anyone is going to notice the difference when you're holding this if they don't see the number?
Maybe from the penta-prism area?
(Bill)
From the penta-prism; I think that's the shape of the cover.
(John)
Yeah, that looks the same as the previous one.
(Bill)
The connectors look fairly similar, and of course, you've got the flip-out LCD screen.
(John)
That's going to be a really nice feature for anybody who wants to shoot video or shoot low, or when you're on a tripod or whatever.
So, it's something Nikon users have been asking for and it's really nice that's finally been delivered in a really high-res full-frame body.
So, what else have we got here? Let's get the rest of the stuff out here.
(Bill)
We've got a tethering clamp for the cables.
(John)
Right, now that's very important because those cables can put a lot of stress on the in-body connectors.
(Bill)
Strap, pretty standard.
(John)
Oh, look at that here - we've got the coveted D850 strap!
[John holds the folded camera strap up to the camera]
I think there will be a few people who will want that.
[Camera zooms in on the D850 labeled strap]
Or the collectors who won't open it; they'll leave it in the plastic.
[Laughs]
And, we've got the battery.
(Bill)
I prefer optic straps anyway.
(John)
Oh, I use optic straps myself, I rather like them.
(Bill)
Awesome.

So, let's get that out of the way here.
[John moves the box out of the way]
(Bill)
So, that's the empty box and we've got the EN-EL 15-A battery, which is the new battery.
(John)
Well, what do you say we pop that in and see if it's got a charge?
We don't have a lens!
(Bill)
You never know, it's a fresh camera.
Fresh lens. Fresh battery.
And there we go, we've got.. well, not much power in there.
But, yeah, it fired up.
(John)
And the charger is going to take a standard figure-eight cable, so that's nice.
This is a good feature: Some of the other Nikon chargers have the little.. the wall thingy that just snaps in... and then it's kinda... this is nicer; I like this one with the cable.
(Bill)
Well it's good that they've delivered it with that because this looks like it does take that clamp on there, which fits on that spot there. And they are a pain in the arse.
[Examines the battery and charger points]
It just means that it turns it into a wall charger, rather than...
(John)
But you can't get the clamp thingy off sometimes, it just sort of gets stuck.
(Bill)
It's very hard. You've got to actually put a sharp object in to clip it out.
But, yeah, no, it's all good.
Not much, very minimal in terms of what comes with it.
(John)
Is there a Quick Start Guide or just a full manual?
(Bill)

Yeah, so we have the warranty card.

Now is this battery the same unit that was with the 800 and the 810?
Or is it a newer higher capacity?
(Bill)
No, they have been updating the batteries, so they are slightly different.
Capacity wise...
(John)
Are they compatible?
(Bill)
I believe they are forward compatible and backward compatible, but we'll see.
It's 1900 milliamp.
(John)
Oh that's a fair bit. Yeah, that's got some juice.
(Bill)
They have increased it a bit, yeah. And it's Lithium Ion 20, which is standard now to the D500 and D750.
(John)
Let's take a look at the memory card slots here.
[Holds camera up to show memory card slots]
Okay, so there's our memory card slot door, and it takes two SD cards.
Now, are they both, or is one a high-speed slot?
(Bill)
No, one is the XQD card slot, and also the SD card slot, which is the top one. XQD for the high-speed.
(John)
That's the one that has the two rows of connectors, right, on it? Like the two on the card?
(Bill)
It's the same card that's in the 5D, or the D5 I should say.
(John)
Okay.
(Bill)
And on the bottom we've got the same sort of little slot here for the grip that goes into it.
(John)
Oh, that's the multi-pin connector for the grip; it doesn't do it through the battery door?
(Bill)
No.
(John)
Oh! Okay. That's interesting.
So, when you put the grip on is this battery still in the camera then, or how does it work?
(Bill)
Well we haven't.. it depends on how it works because we haven't seen the grip yet. So, when they come in we'll be able to test it with the grip on it to get the higher frame rates and so on.
(John)
Yeah, because the grip now has an option, it uses the - I don't know what number - but the battery from the D5 can go in the grip and then this camera goes from a 7 frame per second to a 9 frame per second, and then oh I don't know, 2000 or 3000 shots on a charge. Some outrageously high number.
So I think that's going to be something that people will be pretty excited about, because you've got the full focus engine from the D5, you've got an outrageously high resolution sensor - what are we .. at 46 or 47 megapixels, something like that.
(Bill)
Yeah, it's a very powerful sensor.
(John)
Yeah, and the ability, with that grip and the D5 battery, to run 9 frames per second.
I mean, it wasn't long ago that 9 frames per second was the realm of just a few sports cameras.
And now you're talking a portrait/studio/sports camera.
It really does everything.
There's a lot of excitement about it.
We've had a lot of pre-orders for this camera.
First shipments are in, so if you're watching this video, and you've ordered a camera from Michael's, it might be time to come to the store and pick it up!

You'll probably get the email either tonight or tomorrow morning. So, from the 1st. I'm not too sure about the exact.

So I think we're going to have a lot of happy customers coming in to the store, picking up their new cameras.
And, we know that there's going to be worldwide shortages of these things - it is popular!
So, if you were lucky enough to pre-order, you're going to have a camera.
If you've been sitting on the fence and you've wanted one, it could be a little bit of a wait.
But, doesn't mean your old camera's not going to work!
And we're happy to take your old camera in on trade later on anyway.

So, if anybody is looking to get into Nikon full-frame, I think there's going to be a lot of D800s and 810s showing up!
