The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is the first NIKKOR lens for Nikon SLR cameras that incorporates a 1.4x teleconverter within the lens body. When the teleconverter is used, the maximum focal length of 400 mm on the telephoto side can be increased up to 560 mm. The wide focal-length coverage from 180 mm to 560 mm achieved with a single lens realizes outstanding agility.
* When attached to a DX-format camera, the angle of view is equivalent to that of a 270-600 mm lens in FX/35mm format (378-840 mm when using the built-in teleconverter).
Because the teleconverter switch can be operated while holding the camera grip, the focal length can be smoothly expanded with a simple operation without changing the shooting posture. This eliminates the need for lens change when a longer focal length is required, increasing your shooting possibilities.
Besides easy switching of the built-in teleconverter, the tripod collar, tripod collar ring and controls are all designed to ensure superior operability for more comfortable shooting. The employment of a fluorite lens element and magnesium alloy achieves a weight of approx. 3,500 g, lighter than the current 200-400 mm lens with an external 1.4x teleconverter, also contributing to agility.
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR employs a dust- and drip-resistant structure for enhanced reliability. Movable parts and other sections are sealed to protect the inside of the lens against dust and water droplets. Fluorine coat, that effectively repels dust or dirt, is applied to the front surface of the protective glass to ensure high antifouling performance. These features enable photographers to continue shooting regardless of weather or environmental conditions
With one fluorite lens element and eight ED glass elements, the AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR provides high-resolution images with minimal chromatic aberration stably across the entire frame even at the maximum aperture or when it is stopped down.
Clear images with minimized ghost and flare effects are realized through the combination of an excellent optical design, and Nikon’s superior coating technologies, including Nano Crystal Coat and other anti-reflective coatings.
The AF-S NIKKOR 180-400mm f/4E TC1.4 FL ED VR provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster in NORMAL mode, which remains unchanged even when using the built-in teleconverter. SPORT mode, adopted as an option of the VR function, is especially effective when shooting scenes in which subjects are quickly and erratically moving.

The enhanced drive control algorithm of the AF motor enables more accurate AF tracking based on AF detection results, even for moving subjects that radically change speed.
Even during high-speed continuous shooting, exposure is stably controlled with the adoption of an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism.
