Sony has introduced the a7R IV, which the company calls 'another milestone in mirrorless cameras.
A New Level of Image Quality
The camera has a full-frame 61MP BSI-CMOS sensor with a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range (it's the first new sensor since 2015, according to Sony). It has a hybrid AF system with 567 PDAF and 425 contrast-detect point, and 74% frame coverage. There's also real-time eye, human and animal AF. The camera can shoot at 10 fps with continuous AF for up to 68 photos.
THE KING OF FULL-FRAME SENSORS
The Alpha 7R IV features a newly developed
61 Megapixel back-illuminated image sensor, the first of its kind. This remarkable new sensor delivers 15 stops of dynamic range for the extraordinarily detailed rendition of subtle details, while tweaked & refined algorithms ensure pleasing colours and skin tones.
The body has been redesigned, with upgraded weather-sealing, including foam gaskets around the battery and card doors, and raised lips around all the connectors that, along with rubber port doors prevent water from working its way around the seal. There'an also a significantly deeper grip, a larger joystick and repositioned, 'newly designed' buttons and dials. There's also a 5.76M-dot EVF, dual UHS-II card slots and USB-C. The camera also has 802.11ac Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth and NFC.
The a7R IV uses the NP-FZ100 battery, which can take approximately 670 shots using the LCD and 530 using the EVF, based on CIPA standard testing. A battery grip, which holds two FZ100s.
As with its predecessor, the a7R IV has built-in 5-axis image stabilization, which can reduce shake by up to 5.5 stops, according to Sony. It has the same Bionz X processor and tilting 1.44M-dot touchscreen display as the Mark III.
If you drop down to APS-C crop mode you get 26 Megapixel images, with near-total-frame AF coverage and 325 PDAF points.
The Pixel Shift mode can capture 960 Megapixels worth of data by compositing 16 images, which can be processed via Sony's Imaging Edge software to create 240MP photos. Users have a choice of 16-shot mode that makes 1/2 pixel shifts or a 4-shot mode that makes full pixel shifts. Using the 1/2 shift mode you get twice the spatial resolution and full colour at each pixel, while the full shift mode (which uses 4 images) just cancels out the Bayer filter.
The a7R IV can capture oversampled 4K/30p video with touch tracking and real-time Eye AF, and support for 8-bit S-Log2/3 and HLG. When using the Super 35 crop there is an additional 1.2x crop at 30p and 1.1x at 24p. As with its predecessor, the top bit rate is 100Mbps using XAVC S.
There's also a new digital interface between the microphone and camera, making the a7R IV the first camera to accept digital audio input. To go along with that there's a new microphone and an XLR adapter, both of which have built-in ADCs to provide a digital signal to the camera (but which also have analog output modes to retain compatibility with older cameras).
The camera includes new connectivity options, thanks to the addition of 5GHz Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi can now be used for tethered shooting as well.
SHOOTING AND FOCUSING SPEED
Combining 567 on-sensor phase-detect autofocus points with refined tracking algorithms, the Alpha 7R IV boasts extraordinarily sophisticated autofocus abilities, with real-time tracking and eye autofocus enabled for both still and movie recording. All of this is available for full-
speed 10fps image capture with AF.
UPGRADES & SECONDARY FEATURES
Product Highlights
The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens is a wide-angle to portrait-length zoom lens that features a constant f/4 maximum aperture to support consistent performance in regard to exposure settings and focus placement throughout the zoom range. Five aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element help to reduce aberrations and distortions while contributing to notable image sharpness and clarity. A Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.
This lens also integrates Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to lessen the appearance of camera shake when working in low-light conditions or with longer focal lengths. Additionally, a dust- and moisture-resistant construction ensures this lens' use in tough environmental conditions.
